The Global Cement & Clinker Technical Glossary

Understanding the chemical and physical properties of cementitious materials is critical for project success. This glossary defines the essential terms used in international trade, laboratory testing, and construction engineering across the CemMatrix Multi-Origin Supply network.

🔬 Chemical & Mineralogical Terms

Alite ($C_3S$)

The most important mineral phase in Portland cement clinker. It is responsible for the early strength (1–7 days) of concrete. High alite content is preferred for fast-track construction projects.

Belite ($C_2S$)

The second major mineral phase in clinker. Belite reacts more slowly than Alite and contributes to the long-term strength (28 days and beyond) and durability of the concrete.

Tricalcium Aluminate ($C_3A$)

A mineral phase that provides rapid hydration and setting. However, it is highly susceptible to sulfate attack. Cements used in marine environments (SRC) must have a strictly limited $C_3A$ content (typically < 5%).

Free Lime (CaO)

Calcium oxide that has not reacted during the kiln process. Excessive free lime can lead to unsoundness, causing the concrete to expand and crack weeks or months after setting.

Loss on Ignition (LOI)

A test that measures the weight loss of a cement sample when heated to high temperatures (900–1000°C). A high LOI usually indicates the presence of moisture or carbonation, which reduces the "freshness" and reactive quality of the cement.

⚙️ Physical & Performance Terms

Blaine Fineness (Specific Surface)

Measured in $cm^2/g$ or $m^2/kg$, this indicates the total surface area of cement particles. Higher Blaine values result in faster hydration and higher early strength but can increase water demand and the risk of thermal cracking.

Soundness (Le Chatelier / Autoclave)

The ability of a hardened cement paste to retain its volume. Unsound cement undergoes delayed expansion, which is tested using the Le Chatelier or Autoclave methods to ensure the safety of the structure.

Setting Time (Initial & Final)

  • Initial Set: The time elapsed from adding water until the paste starts to lose plasticity.

  • Final Set: The time when the paste has hardened sufficiently to resist a specific pressure.

Understanding these is vital for managing logistics on-site, especially in hot climates like Saudi Arabia or Egypt.

Heat of Hydration

The heat generated by the chemical reaction between cement and water. In mass concrete structures (like dams), Low Heat Cement is required to prevent "thermal cracking" caused by the temperature difference between the core and the surface.

🚢 Trading & Sustainability Terms

Clinker Factor

The ratio of clinker used in a finished cement product. Reducing the clinker factor by adding pozzolans (like fly ash or calcined clay) is the primary method for lowering the Carbon Footprint of cement.

CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism)

The EU's landmark 2026 regulation that imposes a carbon price on imported cement based on its embedded $CO_2$ emissions. CemMatrix provides the verified data required to calculate this liability.

Pozzolan

A siliceous or aluminous material (such as volcanic ash or silica fume) that, in itself, possesses little or no cementitious value but will, in finely divided form and in the presence of moisture, react with calcium hydroxide to form compounds possessing cementitious properties.

SDR (Ship/Derrick/Rate)

A logistics term defining the loading or unloading speed of a vessel. High SDR rates at Great 8 ports ensure lower demurrage costs for bulk clinker buyers.
